How to get more Google reviews without asking awkwardly

Reviews are the biggest reason a customer picks you over the next name on the list. Asking doesn't have to be uncomfortable if you ask the right way at the right time.

Most contractors do great work and get a handful of reviews a year. Not because customers are unhappy, but because nobody asked, or the ask came weeks too late. The fix is a habit, not a sales pitch.

Ask everyone, every time

The contractors with the most reviews don't pick and choose who to ask. They ask every customer after every job. It's simpler, it's fair, and it's what Google expects: its rules don't allow asking only the customers you think will be happy.

Asking everyone also gives you something valuable: the chance to hear about a problem while you can still fix it.

Timing is everything

The best moment to ask is right after the job is finished, while the customer is looking at the new roof or the finished kitchen. Wait two weeks and the moment has passed. A short message the same day, with one gentle reminder a few days later, works far better than a big ask a month on.

Make it one tap

Every extra step loses people. Don't tell customers to "search for us on Google and find the review button." Send a link that opens the review form directly, by text, so they can leave a review from their phone in under a minute.

Keep the ask short and personal

A good review request sounds like you, not a marketing department. Thank them by name, mention the job, and ask plainly.

  • Use their first name and mention what you did
  • Say it helps a small business like yours
  • Include the one-tap link
  • Make it easy to reply with a question or a problem instead

That last point matters. A customer with a concern who can reach you directly gives you the chance to make it right.

Answer the reviews you get

Reply to every review, good or bad. A short thank-you shows future customers you pay attention. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint often does more for your reputation than another five-star review.
